Our Story

The Cheesecake Factory has become famous for serving more than 30 legendary flavors of cheesecake in our restaurants for nearly 50 years, but did you know we also offer a delicious lineup of flavors and desserts available exclusively at restaurants and retailers across the globe?

At The Cheesecake Factory Bakery®, our passion is creating premium, indulgent desserts that set the standard for taste, creativity, and innovation. From our world-famous cheesecakes to decadent layer cakes and specialty desserts, we craft every creation with the same artistry and attention to detail found in The Cheesecake Factory® restaurants worldwide.

Our tradition of excellence began with Evelyn Overton in the 1940s, when she found a cheesecake recipe in her local Detroit newspaper that inspired her “Original” cheesecake. Everyone loved it so much that she turned her basement into a small bakery and sold cakes to some of the best restaurants in town.

In 1972, Evelyn and her husband, Oscar, moved to Los Angeles to make one last attempt at running their own business. With the last of their savings, they opened The Cheesecake Factory Bakery and began selling Evelyn’s cheesecakes to restaurants throughout the city. Their commitment to quality, consistency, and creativity quickly became the hallmark of the brand.

Six years later in 1978, their son David opened the first The Cheesecake Factory restaurant in Beverly Hills to showcase his mother’s desserts. On opening day, a line formed out the door, and nearly five decades later, it’s still going strong.

Today, The Cheesecake Factory Bakery is a global brand, delighting consumers around the world with irresistibly delicious, beautifully crafted, and innovative desserts of the highest quality. We continue to expand our presence in domestic and international retail and foodservice markets, growing our brand with integrity while delivering excellence in every slice.

How it All Began
  • 1947

    Evelyn Overton creates our “Original” Cheesecake.

  • 1972

    Oscar and Evelyn leave Detroit and open our first bakery in North Hollywood, California, as Great World Foods, Inc.

  • 1976

    The bakery relocates to Woodland Hills, California, and begins delivering our cheesecakes to local restaurants throughout Southern California.

  • 1978

    The first The Cheesecake Factory restaurant opens in Beverly Hills, California.

  • 1986

    A new bakery production facility opens in Calabasas Hills, California, to provide cheesecakes to our restaurants, other restaurants, and club stores nationwide.

  • 1990

    Our cheesecakes begin selling in retailers and club stores such as Ralphs and Price Club (Costco).

  • 1992

    The Cheesecake Factory Incorporated goes public on NASDAQ with the CAKE stock offering.

  • 1995

    Moved to our current bakery production facility and corporate offices in Calabasas Hills, California.

  • 2006

    Our second bakery production facility opens in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

  • 2012

    We expand our international sales to Asia, Mexico, and the Middle East.

  • 2018

    We launched single-serve cheesecakes and 3-pack of mini cupcakes under The Cheesecake Factory At Home® brand.

  • 2022

    We celebrate the 50th anniversary of our bakery.
